Celebrating good times

Introduction
This activity encourages young people to explore the concept of celebration in our cultures and communities and to consider those moments that human beings celebrate in life.  From this exploration to create an illustrated alphabet about celebration that illustrates beliefs, practices and ways of life. Through this task pupils will be given the opportunity to reflect on their lives and the rites of passage associated with them, why these times are celebrated, who they may celebrate with and how they celebrate both inside a faith/ belief community or as members of families and cultural communities.

Activity
Think about all the special times in people’s lives that they celebrate with others and some of the symbols that express the meanings behind these celebrations.

Working in groups of 4-6, design an illustrated alphabet that can be used as a tool to teach people about either one celebration or a range of celebrations that mark important points in people’s lives (all letters must be included but up to five may be left with no word attached).

The poster design should:
  • be clear and well presented
  • demonstrate an understanding of the journey of life
  • shows an understanding of symbolism in relation to the rite(s) of passage chosen
