Special gifts

Introduction
This activity for pupils aged 5 - 9 years provides a cross-curricular opportunity to explore the theme ‘Special gifts’.

Activity
  • Use a religious story where a key feature is a gift, (e.g. the Christmas story).
  • Pupils should then investigate and explore what gifts they consider to be the most precious e.g. forgiveness, hope, joy, thankfulness.
  • Design and make a token or symbol to represent the gift and explain its meaning.
  • Create a decorated box to hold the ‘gift’. The box should also demonstrate the gift's symbolism. Place the token or symbol inside.
  • A photographic display could be made of the pupils engaged in RE and appropriate cross-curricular activities, role play situations, etc and a display of the boxes and ‘precious gifts’. There could also be some labels, thought balloons or writing showing how the pupils decided on their precious gift, with reasons for their choice.

The display should show:
  • pupils engaged in exciting and stimulating RE related activities
  • evidence of understanding of the nature of a ‘special gift’
