Tell me a story

Introduction
Story telling has always played a large part in religious education . This activity celebrates that culture by giving pupils an opportunity to think about the significance of a particular story for the community which retells it. It also gives pupils the chance to think about whether there are things they can learn from a particular story. Teachers should choose one of the following stories and study it with the class.
  • Story of Bhai Laloo (Sikh)
  • Story of Bhai Ganaya (Sikh)
  • Story of Siddhartha and the swan (Buddhist)
  • Story of Kisagotami and the mustard seed (Buddhist)
  • Story of Zacchaeus (Christian)
  • Story of the Sower (Christian)

Activity
In groups of up to 6:
  • identify what you think might be the meaning or significance of the story
  • think about what members of the faith community whose story it is find important about the story
  • talk about how the story links with other aspects of the faith community’s religious life (e.g. worship, rites of passage, key figures)
  • make a Power Point or other electronic presentation of the story which gives a short summary of the story itself and a clear explanation of how it is important to the faith community and how it links to other aspects of their religious life. Use illustrations as well as text.

The presentation should:
  • show an understanding of why the story is important to the people who re-tell it and how it plays a part in their lives
  • be engaging, bringing the story to life and showing its importance for a religious tradition
